Razer Unveils 5G Handheld Device for Cloud Gaming

At RazerCon, Razer officially introduced the Razer Edge, a 5G handheld device designed for cloud gaming. The device boasts a 6.8-inch AMOLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and a Full HD+ resolution of 2,400 x 1,080. Razer claims that the display offers 87 percent more pixels than its competitors, such as the Steam Deck with a 1,280 x 800 resolution. The Edge’s Gorilla Glass touchscreen features a 288Hz sampling rate for enhanced responsiveness.

Powered by Qualcomm and Verizon, the Razer Edge runs on the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming Platform, developed exclusively for this device. With a 3GHz octa-core Kryo CPU, an Adreno GPU, active cooling, and six air vents, Razer reports that early benchmarking shows the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 delivering two to three times the speeds of typical mobile platforms like the Snapdragon 720G.

Connectivity and Specifications

Equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 128GB of storage, the Edge also features two-way speakers with Verizon Adaptive Sound, digital microphones, and a webcam for livestreaming gameplay. The device combines an Android 12 tablet with the new Razer Kishi V2 Pro controller, offering analog triggers, microswitches, programmable buttons, and an “ultra-precise” D-pad. The Kishi V2 Pro includes HyperSense haptic feedback and a 3.5mm headphone jack, weighing a total of 400.8 grams.

With regards to gaming, the Edge will come preinstalled with launchers for Epic Games, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and NVIDIA GeForce Now. Additionally, users will have access to remote play services like Steam Link, Moonlight, and Parsec.

Availability and Pricing

The 5G version of the Razer Edge will be a Verizon exclusive, with pricing and availability details to be confirmed later. It is expected to be released in January alongside the WiFi model, which will cost $400. Interested customers can reserve a unit with a refundable deposit of $5 on Razer’s website or RazerStore locations. While the pricing and availability of the standalone Kishi V2 Pro controller have not been disclosed, the Edge offers competitive specs for on-the-go cloud gaming, making it a compelling option compared to alternatives like the Steam Deck.

Other Developments in Cloud Gaming

Razer’s Edge is not the only handheld device targeting cloud gaming. Logitech’s G Cloud Gaming Handheld, priced at $350, is set to launch soon without WiFi 6 or 6E support. Moreover, Google recently announced Chromebooks from Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo designed for streaming games, highlighting the growing interest in cloud gaming among various manufacturers.
