Meta implements geo-blocking for EU users accessing Threads via VPN

European Union users are facing a block when trying to access Threads through a VPN. Content, notifications, and profiles are not loading properly, leading to frustration among some users. Meta has stated that it is implementing measures to prevent access from European countries where the app is unavailable. Despite this setback, Europe remains an important market for Meta, with hopes for expansion in the future. However, the app currently lacks key features like hashtags.
Threads, which has gained 100 million users in under a week, is seen as a major competitor to Twitter. Mark Zuckerberg emphasizes the organic growth of the platform, without resorting to traditional advertising methods. There is speculation that an expansion to the EU could further boost its popularity, potentially impacting Twitter’s user base. The EU’s regulations regarding data sharing and personalized ads pose additional challenges for Meta.
