John Deere Relents on Right to Repair

John Deere, a long-time opponent of right to repair laws, is now making some concessions. The company has reached an agreement with the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) that allows US farmers and independent repair shops to fix equipment using official diagnostics, manuals, tools, and training. Owners can disable electronic locks and access repair resources even if no longer offered by Deere.

Protections and Limitations of the Agreement

While the agreement provides repair freedom, it also includes protections for John Deere. The company will not have to reveal trade secrets, permit repairs that impact emissions controls or safety features, or modify power levels. Repair actions must also comply with the law.

Implications of the Voluntary Agreement

The agreement came into effect on January 8th, but specific changes to Deere’s practices are yet to be disclosed. Senior VP Dave Gilmore expressed the company’s commitment to collaborating with customers and the AFBF for future repair solutions.
