EU’s got some new rules on fake news and Google, Meta, and Twitter are on board

Big Tech Joins EU’s Fight Against Disinformation
Some of the biggest names in tech have joined forces with the European Union to combat disinformation. Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, Twitch, and Twitter have all committed to the updated Code of Practice on Disinformation. The goal is to tackle the challenges posed by recent events like the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Cracking Down on Fake News
The focus of the new guidelines will be on cutting off revenue streams for disinformation, removing ads from fake news sources, and clamping down on bots, fake accounts, and deepfakes. Transparency centers and task forces will be set up to ensure the code is properly implemented. There will also be improved monitoring and data access for researchers. Political ads will be clearly labeled, and users will be given better tools to spot false claims.
Major tech companies have six months to make the necessary changes and will report their progress in 2023. While participation in the code is voluntary, the involvement of these companies could make it more challenging for fake news to spread in Europe and beyond.
