Europe is now getting serious about Apple’s sneaky music streaming rules

Back in 2021, the European Commission decided to throw some serious shade at Apple, accusing the tech giant of being a bit too bossy with music streaming apps. The commission basically called Apple out for making developers use its payment system and keeping them from telling users about cheaper options outside of iOS apps. Now, the commission is focusing only on the “anti-steering obligations” Apple imposes on developers.
According to the commission, these obligations are like playing dirty in the sandbox and go against some fancy-sounding European Union treaty. They’re saying Apple is being a bit of a bully, making users pay more and limiting their choices. This whole mess started when Spotify complained about Apple’s shady practices back in 2019.
If the commission decides Apple is guilty of breaking antitrust laws, they could put a stop to Apple’s shenanigans and hit them with a hefty fine. Spotify is over the moon about the commission’s announcement, saying it’s time for Apple to stop being a big meanie and let the little guys have a chance.
Apple, on the other hand, seems pretty chill about the whole thing, hoping the commission will just drop the complaint altogether. So, will Apple have to change its ways and play fair? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: the drama is far from over.
