New EU Regulations to Provide Benefits and Protections for Gig Workers

Gig workers in the EU are set to receive new benefits and protections, making it easier for them to secure employment status. With over 500 digital labor platforms operating in the EU and around 28 million platform workers employed, the new rules come following agreements between the European Parliament and EU Member States. These policies were initially proposed by the European Commission in 2021.

Focus on Employment Status and Rights for Gig Workers

The key focus of the new rules is on employment status for gig workers, ensuring that they receive the labor and social rights associated with official worker titles. This includes rights such as a legal minimum wage, the ability to engage in collective bargaining, health protections at work, and options for paid leave and sick days. By recognizing worker status from the EU, gig workers can also become eligible for unemployment benefits.

Most gig workers are employed by digital apps like Uber or Deliveroo, so the new directive will mandate “human oversight of automated systems” to guarantee labor rights and proper working conditions. Workers will also have the right to challenge any automated decisions made by digital employers, such as terminations.
