Apple reinstates Epic’s developer account just two days after kicking it out

Apple has made a complete turnaround on their decision to ban Epic Games’ developer account, all thanks to the European Union stepping in. This means that Epic can now bring their own app store to iPhones and iPads in the EU, and possibly bring Fortnite back to those devices after a four-year absence. Apple initially removed Fortnite from the App Store due to a disagreement over in-app purchases, setting off a legal battle between the two companies.

Chatting it out with Epic, Apple has agreed to reinstate their developer account, stating a commitment to following the rules and policies outlined in the Digital Markets Act. Epic, in return, is getting ready to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. It’s all systems go from here!

Apple’s sudden change of heart, which previously branded Epic as “verifiably untrustworthy,” probably has nothing to do with the EU regulators keeping a close eye on them. Recent reports indicated that the EU was prepared to question Apple about the ban, which Epic criticized as a serious violation of the DMA. This law mandates that Apple must allow third-party app stores on iOS in the EU, though companies still need to abide by Apple’s rules if they want to establish their own marketplace on the iPhone.

In other news, the EU recently hit Apple with a hefty $2 billion fine for hindering third-party music streaming apps on the App Store. This fine represents the first one against Apple by the EU and is their third-largest financial penalty to date. Apple is pushing back against the fine, filing an appeal in response.

With even bigger penalties looming for companies that don’t comply with the DMA, and the EU flexing its regulatory muscle, it’s no wonder Apple decided to surrender in their dispute with Epic. Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney pointed out that Apple quickly changed course following a swift investigation by the European Commission.
