The CEOs of leading AI companies appeared before Congress once again on Wednesday, with a more subdued conversation about the regulation of AI development. The meeting was organized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and included over 20 tech and civil society leaders discussing the need for government regulation. Despite diverse views, consensus was reached on the role of government in regulating AI.

Areas of disagreement were apparent during the meeting, particularly regarding the risks of open-source AI. Elon Musk expressed concerns about AI-powered self-driving cars, while discussions on licensing, testing, and other forms of regulation took place without reaching a consensus.

Participants agreed on the necessity for federal government involvement in dealing with transformational innovation, suggesting the creation of a $32 billion fund to maximize the benefits of AI. Mark Zuckerberg stressed the importance of developing and rolling out AI technology responsibly, working with civil society leaders, and maintaining America’s leadership in defining technical standards.

Elon Musk highlighted the civilizational risk posed by AI and proposed the establishment of a Federal Department of AI for industry regulation, drawing parallels to the FAA and SEC. He emphasized the significance of the meeting for the future of civilization.
