The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that AirTags are permitted on checked baggage as long as the battery contains less than 0.3g of lithium. This clarification comes after concerns that Lufthansa might ban active AirTags due to interpretation of ICAO guidelines.
Lufthansa and German regulators approve item trackers
Lufthansa has issued a statement confirming that Apple’s devices, including AirTags, are allowed on flights. Both the airline and German regulators have determined that item trackers with small batteries and low power do not pose a safety risk. Exemptions have been sought for AirTags and similar tags for checked luggage restrictions.
No reported incidents prompt change in stance
While governments or airlines may alter their stance, there have been no reports of incidents that would prompt a change in allowing AirTags and similar products on flights. Travelers can use these devices for reassurance during their vacations without fear of airline action.
