The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is currently throwing a wrench in Microsoft’s plans to scoop up Activision Blizzard. They’ve filed for an injunction to put the brakes on the merger before the July 18th deadline. Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, seems chill about it and thinks it’s just a way to speed up the whole legal process. But the FTC is like, “Hold up, Activision is a big player in the gaming world, we can’t let this slide.”

Cloud gaming monopolization concerns are also on the table, with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority looking to rain on Microsoft’s $68.7 billion parade. Microsoft’s trying to calm everyone down by teaming up with game streaming services and promising to keep games like Call of Duty available on all platforms. The European Union gave the thumbs up, but getting the US and UK on board is still crucial for Microsoft.

The legal drama is unfolding with the FTC’s judge in the spotlight and possible appeals down the road. Microsoft’s facing some roadblocks in meeting regulatory requirements in key markets. Stay tuned for more updates on the FTC’s quest to put a stop to Microsoft’s big merger dreams with Activision Blizzard.
