Gone are the days when movies based on video games tried to distance themselves from their source material. The final trailer for the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie by Illumination fully embraces its gaming origins. From scenes reminiscent of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this movie screams game adaptation.

Fans eager to hear more of Chris Pratt’s Mario voice may be disappointed, as the final trailer doesn’t offer much new in that department. However, it does give a clear glimpse into the movie’s tone. With Bowser leading an army of familiar video game enemies, Mario and Donkey Kong using power mushrooms and fire flowers, and a brightly-rendered Rainbow Road race with Mario and Peach, the movie promises to be a fun and familiar gaming experience with upgraded graphics.

This authenticity shouldn’t come as a surprise, as directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic reveal that Illumination has closely collaborated with Nintendo to ensure the film captures the essence of the beloved franchise. Additionally, Illumination has enhanced its lighting and rendering technology to take the Super Mario Bros. Movie to a level beyond anything they’ve done before.

Fans eager to experience the full Mario performance can mark their calendars for the movie’s release on April 5, 2023.
