X Faces Formal EU Investigation

X, formerly known as Twitter, is under scrutiny by the European Commission for potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The Commission has opened formal infringement proceedings to investigate X’s operations, specifically looking into issues related to transparency, illegal content, and deceptive design.

Compliance Requirements for Very Large Online Platforms

As part of the DSA, online services operating in the EU were required to declare their size to determine if they meet the criteria as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP). Platforms designated as VLOPs had to comply with various measures, including establishing transparency in advertising and content moderation, providing user-friendly terms and conditions, and addressing risks such as illegal content and protecting minors.

The European Commission’s actions against X follow a series of reports and ongoing concerns about the platform’s handling of content related to the Israel-Hamas War. The Commission’s goal is to ensure that online platforms like X adhere to regulations and responsibilities in safeguarding citizens and democracies.
